Disney vs. Marvel

Walt Disney has been making movies with superheros based on Stan Lee's characters. He wants a $5.5 billion profit from Walt Disney. The defendant claims Walt Disney has copy rights to the characters being used, but seem to be false. Lee is seeking "the maximum statutory damages allowable” along with full control over Iron Man, Spider Man, etc. In the suit, SLMI claims that Stan Lee signed his rights over the comic books that he had created. In  August 2009 Disney bought Marvel for $4 billion. That deal had been confirmed at the end of that year.

This article is important because it discusses why Stan Lee is suing Walt Disney and it gives facts about the law suit. This article caught my eye because it I love watching Disney movies. It's my childhood. As a student, this article teaches me about law suits. As a future filmmaker, this article informs me what is happening in the industry. As a consumer, this article would influence my decision on investing in a company. Questions I have now are: why is Stan Lee suing Walt Disney now when he signed his rights away? What will be the outcome?

  1. This is interesting. I wonder if the man suing planned this as soon as he heard about the deal for Disney to buy out Marvel?

  4. I can't believe that Stan Lee is suing Disney. When I first heard that Disney had decided to buy Marvel, I had mixed emotions because I did not know how everything would eventually pan out. I actually thought that Lee would be excited because now it meant that Marvel, the company that carried out his creations, would be part of a bigger company. I guess Stan did not really feel this way for he chose to sue Disney.
